Mixed flavours in Spain

The meeting was held in Málaga- Spain from October 23rd to 29th. Our subjet was: Gastronomy in our countries.
Every country prepared six recipes according to an agreed template. We printed them and prepared the recipe books as well as decoration at the school with big size recipes and their corresponding photos.
On the first day, Monday 24th, we welcomed the teachers and students at our school, showed them around and let them see the decoration and the welcome greetings our students had previously prepared. We entered the bilingual lesson class and then attended the presentations by two of our Comenius students on the city of Málaga and on Spanish gastronomy. Then we had a breakfast at the school bar of “churros” and chocolate.
Finally we travelled to the inner village of Torrox. There, in a country house, every team prepared a dish from those included in the recipes. We had lots of fun. A journalist came and took photos and wrote an article on the event which was published on the local newspaper some days later.

 newspaper link
Turkey prepared a dessert of figs with walnuts and cream “Incir Tatlisi”; the German dish was called “Spatzle” and it was based on onions, cheese and noodles. The Polish team made some “Pierogi” ,fruit pastry filled with peaches, strawberries, blackberries… Portugal cooked their typical cod “Bacalhau á Gomes Sá”, typical Lisbon dish with onions and eggs. We could also taste the Spanish flavours of Migas, Paella, chicken meat with almonds, fried peppers, Spanish omelette…
After lunch we went to another village on the coast and took a walk along Málaga´s bay
 Some photos in Picasaweb
On the second day we travelled to Granada, walked down the narrow and steep streets of the Albaicín towards “El paseo de los tristes” and after lunch we took a guided tour of its most famous monument: the World Heritage Alhambra Palace and its amazing gardens.
On the third day Málaga was the aim of our visit. A bus took us to the highest point of the city, the Gibralfaro Castle where we could see the wonderful views and then went down to take a guided tour visiting the market place, the cathedral…and finally the Picasso museum where we enjoyed an interesting and interactive visit watching the paintings and trying to understand Picasso´s works.
At night we visited the Flamenco museum at “Peña Juan Breva” and learned about the origins and roots of flamenco which was recently declared World Heritage by Unesco, and enjoyed a great flamenco show.
On Thursday, 24th went up to see the breathtaking views over the Tajo in Ronda. The guided tour took us to the oldest bullring in Spain, the Arab Baths and the old Moorish streets of the beautiful city where Rilke and other writers lived for some time.
The farewell party took place in Málaga at one of the oldest taverns in town “El Pimpi” where we tasted the typical dishes of the place.
The cars museum was visited on Friday-28th. The students enjoyed the walk along the promenade and then we rehearsed some flamenco dancing at the school theatre.
We may say we have all enjoyed the tastes, the colours and the smell of our country and we´ve tried to transmit the essence of the Mediterranean way of life, the way we understand life.

Meeting in Poland

The programme started on Monday 9 May in Warsaw. We went sightseeing and visited the Palace of Culture and Science with its amazing views, continued to the Royal Baths Park where the statue of Chopin in located along with the Belvedere Palace. We had time to relax and did a gondola cruise around the lake.  At the next stop we paid a visit to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and could enjoy with the guards-relay. The guided tour stopped at the Old Town where we had lunch at the Market Square. In the afternoon we visited the church of the Holy Cross and got ready to travel to Piotrkóv Trybunalski.
The second day took us to the Nikolaj Kopernik School. Mrs Sipa (the school principal) welcomed us with a friendly speech and invited us to have a coffee and Polish delights. Multimedia presentations started then in the school auditorium. The topic for this Comenius gathering was “Wedding ceremonies” in our countries. Polish students performed a wedding ceremony and its party. They gave an excellent performance in which were included singing and acting and was followed by the video presentations of the other countries, covering also one about the Jewish weddings. After lunch in the School canteen we had the European Day poster contest. Portuguese design was chosen (as usual). We finished our working day discussing the next steps in the project.
Wieliczka Salt Mine is a priceless historical monument of the World Natural and Cultural Heritage list of UNESCO and one of the most well-known places in Poland. We visited the place in our way to Cracow on the third day. The guided visit led us to the underground restaurant at about 130 m below the ground level. After lunch we arrived to Cracow and stopped in the Main Market Square where we took a ride in a horse-drawn carriage.
On the forth day students and teachers were delighted with the visit of Wawel Castle (The Royal State Rooms), Wawel Cathedral, the grave of Maria and Lech Kaczynski and the Dragon´s Den. The visit continued admiring the Mariacki Church and finally the Jewish district of Kazimierz. In the evening we went back to Piotrkóv.
The next morning Polish students showed us their town as if they were tourist guides. In the evening we were invited to the Prom ball and had our farewell party.
The moments we lived there in Poland will be in our minds forever; the video below is just to remember some of them.

Meeting in Lisbon

St. Valentine’s Meeting in Portugal
The students brought along greeting cards and drawings which were exposed in the entrance hall of Agrupamento de Escolas de Santa Maria dos Olivais in Lisbon. As could be see the topic was presented in more or less the same way by young people all over Europe. This presentation of the project was completed by an exhibiton about the different regions of Portugal. Quite a number of colleagues from the Portuguese school allowed some of their personal belongings ranging from Porto to the Acores Islands being shown to the visitors.

Besides that an elaborated program took the Comenius gathering to the sights in and around Lisbon. At the first morning they paid a visit to the Ocenário which was built for the World Exhibition in 1998. During the guided tour the lookers on were made acquainted with the features of the five different oceans and their wild life. They were also informed that people are obliged to keep these habitats for mankind and as a heritage for the future.
In the rainy afternoon the visitors were taken to the national Palace of Queluz. Unfortunately the garden was not open for the public because of the heavy rain showers. But the guided tour inside the baroque palace was informative and can be regarded as a success. Mainly because of the scenes where actresses, a singer and dancers dressed in baroque costumes performed their parts.
It is understood that a guided tour in the city and the old town “Alfama” was on the program as well. The devastating earthquake of 1st November 1755 and the large fire of 1988 had destroyed Lisbon seriously; the results were new urban districts and settlements. Luckily enough there was no catastrophe needed to set off the amelioration of the old town, the “Alfama”. A walk through Chiado quarter, a stay at St. Roque and the Belverdere of S. Pedro de Alcantara completed the walk around the town of Lisbon. The day was finished at a typical Fado evening out in Chiado.

Places of UESCO World Heritage are also to be found near Lisbon: The picturesque village of Sintra and the National Palace Pena were the sights to be visited next morning. And in the afternoon there was a guided tour at the once monastery Capuchos after having had a short lunch (thunderstorm made it short) in Serra Sinta. On the way back to Lisbon there was a stop at the westernmost part of Europe, Cabo da Roca and the lighthouse Santa Maria. And finally there was a walk along the promenade of the well known resort of Cascais.

On the fourth day of the meeting students and teachers of the Comenius gathering were guided through the marvelous monastery of Jerónimos, paid a visit to the Cultural centre of Belém, the Museum of Coaches and the landmark of Libon, the Tower of Belém. In the evening a festive farewell party closed the project meeting were the headmistress herself, Mrs. Rosa Carvalho, performed some Fado songs.

Second meeting: Wiesloch (Germany)

From 3rd till 10th December teachers and students from five European countries met at Louise-Otto-Peters-School in Wiesloch. The project aims at common and different aspects of folk dance and music instruments, festivities, public and religious festivals etc.

The programme started when the group met for a guided tour in Mannheim Castle which is renowned for its size and style. The visitors were made acquainted with the cultural programme presented by decorations, paintings, carpets during the 18th and 19th century.
The guided tour in Mannheim Castle was necessary for an understanding of the neighbouring Jesuit’s Church and the Sebastian’s Church at the market place as well as the programme of Schwetzingen Castle Gardens (to be visited on Thursday).
The Jewish Synagogue was not open to the public because of Saturday. So the group had a look at the building from outside and is informed about the history of the Jewish community in Mannheim.
The Mosque in Mannheim offered the visitors a warm welcome. They explained the rites from entering a mosque to praying, teaching and learning. Afterwards the audience met in the tearoom for further explanations and information.

On early Sunday afternoon the group arrived in the picturesque medieval town of Bad Wimpfen.

On Monday, 6th December, the projects were presented at the hall of the Vocational School Centre Wiesloch. The second half was made part of an official Welcome Event at which the principal Mr. Rolf Ohnemus could welcome not only teachers and students of the project but also from side of the Rhine-Neckar-District-Administration Mr. Bernhard Haffner, Head of Department for Schools, and the 1st Mayor of Wiesloch, Mrs. Ursula Hänsch. To welcome the guests from abroad the theatre group of LOP-School performed some scened due to Saint Nicholas Day.

On Tuesday there was a day outing in Strasbourg and boat trip on the canals from where one has a view of the European institutions and the city centre. Strasbourg Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral dating back to the 11th century and one of the landmarks of the Rhine Valley. The astronomical clock and the tapestries are among the most interesting features of the building.

On Wednesday the group paid a visit to “Dr. Carl Benz Automobile Museum” in Ladenburg to introduce into the 125-years-old history of the automobile.
A guided tour in Heidelberg made the visitors acquainted with the Old University with Library, Auditorium and Students’ Carcer. The Jesuits’ Church (compared with Mannheim and Rome), the Memorial of Friedrich Ebert, first President of the Weimar Republic, Old Bridge and Holy Ghost Church.
Afterwards they went up to Heidelberg Castle to see the ruins, garden and palaces.

On Thursday morning the Comenius gathering went to Schwetzingen Castle Garden. The world famous garden is among the highest ranking gardens in Europe and its administration applies for UNESCO World Heritage.
Afterwards the visitors were taken to “Hockenheimring” which is one of the most modern racetracks in the world. Built between 1930 and 1932 it is closely connected with the rapid development of (sports-)cars and motorbikes.

In the late afternoon a festive farewell party at Schwetzingen Castle Restaurant was the proper surroundings to finalize the project meeting which had been so successful in each respect.

This is the presentation of the Spanish group in the second meeting held in Germany. It was followed by a performance of the students.
